Supreme Court decides Abia governorship tussle today, May 12

- There is uneasy calm in Abia state ahead of today’s judgement by the Supreme Court on the state's governorship tussle

- The case was filed by Uche Ogah who is accusing Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of allegedly submitting false tax information to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)

- Supporters of both Ogah and the governor are in Abuja for the judgement

All eyes are on Nigeria's apex court today, May 12, as the Supreme Court delivers the final judgement on the Abia state governorship tussle.

Already, supporters of the two contending parties, who are members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), have relocated to Abuja, Daily Trust reports.

Recall that on Monday, June 27, 2016, a Federal High Court in Abuja sacked Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia state for allegedly submitting false information to the PDP ahead of the party’s governorship primary election in December 2014.

Governor Ikpeazu will be hoping the judgment goes his way

The judge, Justice Okon Abang found the governor guilty of tax offences.

In another judgement on August 27, 2016, the Court of Appeal described the ruling by Justice Abang as a disservice to democracy, and ordered Ikpeazu, who went there to appeal the judgement of the High Court, to retain his office.

The five-member panel of judges set aside the judgement of Justice Okon Abang. They unanimously agreed that the tax documents of the governor are not false.

Subsequently, Ogah approached the Supreme Court where he prayed that the High Court judgement should be upheld.
